| Monday, 03 October 2011 18:44 |
Nowadays it isn't enough to link your newsletter, social account pages or promotional messages and expect people to take action. Sometimes you have to employ better "in your face" methods of convincing people to take the action you want. You may have missed an upsell opportunity when: ...a user makes a comment
"Thank you for your comment" is a nice way of thanking your user but how about convincing them to sign up for your newsletter as well. You already have their email address, just prefill out the details to make it easy to hit "subscribe".
...a user sends an emailSame as above....a user lands on a 404 page
If a user hasn't found what they are looking for, make it easier by providing a search box, most popular articles, recent articles and a link to the site map. While you are at it, why not invite them to sign up?
...a user is finished reading; after articles & before commentsThis area isn't just for banners and author credit boxes. It's a great spot to solicit newsletter sign ups and link to relevant articles within your site to promote more page views....on first sight: homepage, eye level
This seems obvious but homepage, eye level (about the top half through centered) is still the best spot to promote sign ups, newsletters and even products. However, keep it a reasonable size so it doesn't overwhelm what the visitor is looking for.
...just before a user leaves: footerRepeat short links to important pages in the footer in addition to site credit information. Don't make the user scroll all the way back up before seeing this vital information....a user registers: after account sign upsThis is another great location for newsletter sign ups, social page linking and more....a user receives a new account welcome emailDon't just leave these emails to a few sentences. Let the user know what else there is to do on your website and how they can connect with you on other social sites.Where are your upsell hotspots?Have you tried any successful upselling locations not listed here?
