"Can you start something that's not real, and actually turn it into the
world's largest media company?" ~ John Perry, business development executive
at Warner Bros.
Talk about 'faking it until you make it'. Manka Bros was created in 1999
by John Perry and Chris Stengel who used a fake online persona (
dubbed "Khan Manka" )
to draw attention to a nonexistent company:
Manka Bros. Studios.
Manka Bros. Studios is supposed to be the "World's Largest Media Company"
specializing in theatre, music, television, publishing, etc. There's even a
Manka
Kids department sporting fictional cartoon characters such as Pelican't
(a pelican with low self esteem) and Dolphinsect (a dolphin fly thingy
who once did not believe in God).
Khan
Manka's popular blog has created confusion among the media industry as
everyone asks "Who is Manka?". Quoted from his blog:
"...I'm leaving the office for the weekend.
I'm going to Chelsea Clinton's wedding in some God forsaken town called
Rhinebeck, New York.
I don't know where it is and I don't know the address.
I was told I would be blindfolded once I touched down at Teterboro..."
In reality, the site barely makes enough to cover hosting bills and is
visited most by curious Hollywood insiders.
On January 27th, Google released another feature called "Social Search" which
allows you to plugin your social networks and get reviews from friends and
contacts. You have to be logged into your Google account to use this feature and
have your social networks set up under your Google profile.
The feature works by searching on a search term, say "France" and
results come combined with public updates from your social networks.
Maybe you've had a hunch these past few months and you hardly need me to tell you. Now is a great opportunity to take smart risks and purchase domains, build websites, work on business plans and create the next multi-million dollar product.
A Bad Economy is a Challenge
There are many ways we can look at the current state of economy and choose how it drives our ambition and shapes our investments. If you are like me, you may have chosen to look at it like a challenge, something to overcome. When things get better you'll come out ahead.
This Isn't the First Time
Don't believe all the doom and gloom stories you hear. Our economy has been through this before, yet worse in certain times. We bounce back. The world doesn't end. But there is always a certain group of people who take the opportunity to fan out something good when the rest of the world catches up post-recession.
What You Should Be Doing
Look for great deals and opportunities. There are plenty of good domains and websites that need new owners for one reason or another. Also take this chance to reformat your domain business plan. Audit your portfolio. Decide what is working and what is not. Get rid of the duds. Decide what type of sites and what type of monetization you want to bring into your plan.
Learn Something
Take the time to learn something new that will benefit your domain business plan. Interested in self web development? Find out what it takes. Want to become a better marketer? Hit the books. Learn anything that will gain you more insight.
Most people don't want to step out of their comfort zone right now because they view it as a risky move. Others will go on to revolutionize the way things are done right here in our industry. Will you be next?
Google Adwords allows you to order TV commercials and choose which time slot,
network or program to show your ad. If you need help creating an ad,
voice
and video talent is available. Although introduced a couple of years ago, I
am surprised this solution isn't more popular.
Some speculate this might lead to more "spam" on television or poor,
unprofessional media ads.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there is a
solution for Adsense with current partners including Dish Network, Hallmark
Channel and the History Channel.
I am wondering how this will tie in with
GoogleTV
and overall affect the media advertising industry.
Slate's Seth Stevenson tries out Google Adwords TV Advertising and reports
results.
There are people who shine far above the rest. People with true, passionate talent that move our hearts and stir our souls. I happened to stumble upon David Choi's video of Britney's new song titled "Womanizer " on YouTube. Great, I thought. This is going to be funny. I clicked the play button and was blown away by his own twist of the song on guitar.
I felt it appropriate to reconize him here, partly because you will be hearing more about this man very soon. He's got an album coming out. Take a look at one of his origional song's called "Enjoy the View ".
On the opposite side of the this fence is a weird song by Beyonce called "Single Ladies ". The chorus is catchy but the dancing and background music is a tad strange. I haven't made up my mind if I like it not. The video itself is shot and compiled differently.
