Domain Name Scams - Intro
Friday, 21 September 2007

I’ve heard the internet be compared to the wild west. In a sense, it’s true. People are ripped off too easily, crappy products, useless products.

People can create any identity they want, rip you off and hide themselves under a new identity. Thankfully there are measures you can take to avoid this.

When You’re the Domain Buyer

- Use Escrow for purchases higher than $1,000

- Use a check or bank wire only with allowed time for funds to clear in amounts higher than $10,0000

- Paypal should be fine for amounts under $1,000. But be warned, Paypal doesn’t refund purchases based on services. (Domains aren’t considered physical goods to eBay). Using your own merchant account is your best solution.

- Always ask to see screenshots of stats and revenue.

- Verify stats by going to Google, Alexa and URL Trends. This will help you find similarities or discrepancies.

- Search for the domain name in Google without the www and within quotes. Example: “Spaggle.com”. This will bring up any related threads or problems the domain has faced with others.

- Avoid buying on the basis of useless stats such as Google Page Rank, Alexa Rank and pageviews (ask to see unique visits instead).

- Always sign a contract or bill of sale for domains priced over $1,000.

When You’re the Domain Seller

- Ask the buyer to fax a copy of his/her drivers license and/or utility bill and cross check the information in PayPal or via utility bill.

If the seller or the buyer is under 18 years old, make sure you get their parents to sign a Bill of Sale, no matter what price you are selling for. Make sure it states they represent the minor and what is included in the sale.
