To me, anyone who doesn't have a plan for their portfolio are blindly purchasing domains and wasting money. You shouldn't purchase domains that you have no clue what to do with. Decrease the risk by coming up with a niche plan for your portfolio. That way all domains you own lay a path to increase your revenue.
If you buy domains to:
Flip: Focus on domains that have a proven track record of traffic or revenue for at least six months. Reconsider the ones that need constant updates or promotion unless you have the talent, time or money to put into it.
Develop: Look for domains that need improvement or unregistered domains that provide a niche.
Park: Same as flipping, focus on domains that have a proven track record of traffic or revenue for at least six months. Look for improvements that can be made such as keyword targetting or template adjustments.
All these purposes have sub-types. For example, I purchase mainly for development. But I only focus on domains that fall close to my skill set. I also look at the unique content and commercial perspective of the domain. Nothing else matters to me. Traffic and revenue are bonuses.
Come up with your niche and examine your portfolio. I bet you have domains that are wasting money sitting around that someone else can use.
