My 8 year old daughter is going to have a summer project: building her own website! First I taught her about online information security and the importance of choosing an easy to remember and spell domain name. We also thought about choosing a domain related to her content. She chose the FirstNameLastName.com concept of a fictional character. We went through several concepts of this: PlanetFirstName.com, FirstNamesLab.com, FirstNameStreet.com, all which sounded too bland and boring before finally settling with the FirstNameLastName.com idea. We posted our request on a couple of forums. After a couple of days, I showed her the responses. She came up with the domain name on her own after combining a first name she liked along with a cool domain another domainer proposed. Next, we will brainstorm about content keeping our target audience in mind (kids). This experience so far has been beneficial for us both. She gets to keep busy during the summer and I get to teach her something about domains and development. It will be fun for me showing her how to upload files and monitor stats. There are a few rules in which was decided upon:
Overall, this will be a great experience for her to teach her more about the internet, development and targeted traffic. The reason for tracking this on my blog is for other parents who want to do the same for their children. I'll post more as this project develops and a link when the site is launched.
