Man in Jail for Brown Lawn, Could Not Afford Upkeep
Saturday, 11 October 2008

Homeowner Joseph Prudente is battling the Beacon Woods Civic Association, which wants him to resod his yard.

On Friday morning, Joseph Prudente put on a pair of shorts and his "Grandpa Gone Wild" T-shirt. He took off his wedding band and put his heart medication in a plastic Wal-Mart bag.

Then his daughter drove him to jail. Grandpa had time to do.

His crime? He had disobeyed a court order that he sod the lawn at his Beacon Woods home.

His bail? Zero.

Prudente, 66, must stay in the Pasco County jail in Land O'Lakes until the required sod work is completed, under a September court order signed by Circuit Judge W. Lowell Bray.

Why didn't the guy just resod his lawn and get it over with?

That's just ridiculous that they would take an elderly gentleman to jail like that, for that kind of "crime." All concerned should be ASHAMED of themselves.

The world has gone mad, it is his yard, why should anyone be able to force him to do something he doesn't want to, maybe he can't afford to have it done.

To Ron:

Good question, but maybe the guy couldn't afford to resod the yard. Sodding a lawn is not cheap, and he and his wife were facing a rough time financially:

Wachovia repossessed his Toyota Scion. His daughter and her two young children, who had fallen on hard times, moved in with him and his wife, Pat

I live in a condo association, and I hate it. We bought our house blissfully unaware of how dumb and petty the covenants can be. I wouldn't recommend condo living to anyone.

This is incredible. For them to be able to put him in jail for something like this should scare the hell out of all Americans.

Sod is pretty expensive and maybe the fellow was already choosing between food and medication. Requiring landscaping is too much to bear when you are on a fixed income.

Why didn't neighbors help him out? Or, better yet, why isn't there a volunteer organization to do these things in his area?

In our city, there is a volunteer group that helps elderly people with upkeep on their homes. I sounds like there is one needed in this situation.
