Developing GEO Domains: The Beast of All Projects
Thursday, 08 April 2010 08:37

Developing a location centric domain is a challenge within itself. Not only does it require extensive research but you must brand the site in such a way that triggers the acceptance of its targeted audience. Simply put: they need a reason to use your geo domain versus the overflow of online and offline content (television, radio newspapers, etc) they already receive in their area.

The good news is; once you find a successful method of development you can repeat the process for your other geo domains.

Luckily we have fantastic examples within our own industry: Missouri.me developed by LocalTek (Bruce Marler), Lowell.com developed by Silver Internet Ventures, LLC (Elliot Silver) and PalmSprings.com developed by Castello Cities Internet Network, INC. (The Castello Brothers). Each website has their own unique method of presentation and branding (which you see repeated for their other properties) and lays a solid foundation of successful geo development.

While developing geo domains are one of the most difficult projects to undertake, do not be turned off by the labor required to successfully brand one. Gathering location data is easier thanks to the flood of API usage. Most data can be obtained via this method and mashed with your own applications or solutions.

If you decide to go this route my best advice would be to take advantage of the emerging methods in development (APIs, AJAX, social marketing, etc) that creates an experience for the user they can't get anywhere else.
