Regarding Epik: Don't Bring Out the Pitchforks Just Yet
Monday, 11 October 2010 12:13

I am on the fence regarding Epik.com. I feel they make a good effort to give us domain monetization options but I feel their set up fees and revenue share should be lowered. However, I feel it is still way too early to judge whether or not it is a good profitable option for domainers. Nonetheless, keep the following in mind:

Epik is Still a Young Company

Epik was launched about a year ago. Many sites under the Epik platform are younger than this. The set up fee is paid once and the site is live as long as Epik is alive. As stated before: maybe they should rethink the set up fee and take a lower revenue split. However, you can approach the company with these concerns and I am sure they would be willing to provide better options.

Development Doesn't Always End Up In Revenue

It is a misconception that development = revenue. Sometimes development = traffic. Sometimes development = leads. Sometimes development = an end user sale. Sometimes development = all of the above or none at all.

Not All Domains Perform Better Developed

Should your domain be developed in the first place? Some names do better parked. Some are better off waiting for an end user sale. Development is not the gold mine of domaining. It is an option that most of the time requires planning and focus (unless you are lucky enough to conceive a quirky idea such as Million Dollar Homepage).

Exhaust All Free Options Before Paying for Development

Epik.com, just like development, is not a gold mine and they already know this. It is simply an option. If you want something like Epik and have concerns about the set up/revenue split; try other alternatives such as SmartName or WhyPark first. Or learn how to install scripts so you have more platform options. Whether you feel your domain would do well on the Epik platform or not is an educated decision which means you should know previously how well your domain does with parking, how well it does with other platforms, what type of domain it is and how Epik might improve whatever it is you are trying to accomplish with development.

A balanced and emotionally controlled point of view about EPIK for a change.

Hi, It surprises me to read a headline like this from someone respected in the industry, until I saw DomainStryker's headline further down the list!

Epik is a resounding success, from what I can make out! One more consideration in favor of development over parking is protection in UDPR. UDPR judges favor developed sites over parked sites. I'm happy ThickFoam.com is page 1 of Google, while Cheese-Board.com - not yet launched - already earned $1.00, and will give them at least 6 months - year to produce income. Not all domains are Google-favored niches that zoom up the ranks that customers are clamoring for a vertical portal. BeachBags.net is one of these - apparently meeting a demand! The season is over for now, until resort starts up in December, but should do outstanding next summer!

in the last six months earmuffs.com made 24 dollars at trafficz.
in the last 2 weeks it's made 26 dollars at epik... and it's not even earmuffs weather yet. i still have my doubts about investing $250 in long tail hyphenated dot nets that i wouldn't even give someone the price of registration for but i think if he can do what he plans on the e-commerce side, quality domains will be making some real money.

If I understand correctly todaro, the new ecommerce sites are some of the most expensive prices I have ever seen! "The setup cost of full eCommerce is $2500 with much of this cost related to managing development of the supply chain. " And epik will only give "10-30% for dropship. 50-90% for inventoried commerce."

I say found a developer, and save your self some money for your domains. Either get a free platform with rev share, or get a developer where you get to keep 100% of the revenue.

100 domains (out of 10000) with good returns don't make Epik a success story. I don't understand how Rob can go overboard saying Epik a success when 99% of Epik websites are making peanuts. I am also surprised to see people giving so much value to transparency and politeness that they forget the importance of results, actual numbers.

Should your domain be developed in the first place? When I read that, the only thing came to my mind was an uproar "boo". Once a wise man said "A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.” Domains are invented for the purpose of development, not for PPC arbitrage garbitrage. If you hold a domain and wondering whether you should develop it or not, then it is not called domain, it is called pigeon sh#$. Domains are for development & development only. Anybody who says other than that, well lets put it this way, kindaa funny. Disappointing post overall.

Mark: domainers (which is the audience of this post) don't always buy domains with the intention of turning them into development properties. In addition: there are other things one can do with a domain besides park and develop. Development is not the only option for a domainer.

Tia,

you are so right to say that "Development Doesn't Always End Up In Revenue" and "Not All Domains Perform Better Developed". Over the past 3 years I've learned that you get different SEO results or visitor behavior from development or parking. Whether it's full developed sites or mini sites vs different parking services, each is to be considered and tested for best monetary performance, of course with minimal investment. You need to look at your portfolio, decide which course of action to take and test it. If it doesn't work in the next 3-6 months then take a different path.

Great subject!
Cheers!

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to take the time to say out of the 8k domains now on our platform over 6k of those domains are under 2 months old. We are transparent and operate straight up giving out the information for Domainers to make informed decisions and backing it up with a full refund guarantee. The choice is simple...

The fact that the competition is on a bash session is something that should come as no surprise. We are daily helping Domainers develop their portfolios and building partnerships with entrepreneurs that are defining the future of Domaining.

Thanks for all the interest.

Regards,
Luke Webster

Can someone from epik please explain why none of your sites are found in Google? I am looking up IcecreamMaker.com and it is not found.. Same with most of your domains. Did google remove these sites? If so please explain further as this is not good. Everyone I look up is not found, harddrives.com etc.. Please explain as this makes me skeptical of epik.com .

After reading these discussions, I would assume alot of people on this blog were not at Traffic conference in Miami. If you take your portfolio seriously, you should check out domainholdings.com and there rapiddomainbuilder.com. They take revenue split, have a great flexible and stable system, ran by industry execs who have a long history in our industry. Its a closed network so they are keeping quality control in place but people are lining up to get into the program. Worth checking out and they are the new players in town who seem to have it all together.

Your Thoughts?
