9 Niche Alternatives to Wordpress and Joomla
Tuesday, 21 December 2010 14:13

Wordpress and Joomla are great platforms for non-developers who need a user interface to perform tasks but sometimes using either one of these may be a little much for what you are trying to accomplish. Thankfully there are alternatives that I can introduce to you that may be more in tune to your needs.

phpFox is 'social networking' centric that generally contains more power versus a Joomla + Community Builder combination.

If you need a simple directory with easy installation then phpMyDirectory is a good choice. However, developers be warned that when it comes to add-ons that Joomla is the better choice else expect a lot of custom scripting if needing tweaks.

Hi Tia.

Thanks for profiling some of these alternatives. I have a few questions hope you can help.

1. Would you happen to know of a cheap eDirectory clone, and a Wordpress theme to integrate with the directory script?

2. Do you have any tips on where a newbie can buy the necessary software/script/template to create a site similar to Elliot's DogWalker(dot)com? A single category, membership fee, and location based, ie. zip codes/city interface both for search & ad entry.

3. Do you know of a simple wordpress template with a wide variety of attractive built-in forms...specifically to input a zip code to interface for lead generation?

4. Can you recommend a coupon site script that has the functionality to have user create printable coupons; and visitors can print off line and bring it in store...that doesn't cost thousands of dollars?

Thanks.

Poor Uncle,

1. Not offhand but I do know Elliot's DogGroomers.com runs off a directory for Wordpress so you might want to ask him what he's doing. Joomla can do this with add-ons so you might want to check that out.

2. Elliot's DogWalker.com is a custom theme with Wordpress add-ons. I am not sure of the specific plugins (you can try emailing him to ask) but if you try searching for plugins http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ there is bound to be something similar.

3. Not using a specific template but this can probably be accomplished using Contact Form 7: http://wordpress.org/extend/pl...ct-form-7/

4. I just found CouponPress.com that runs off Wordpress. It does cost money and I've never used it before, however looks promising. It appears to be similar to RetailMeNot.

Your Thoughts?
