Can You Make $1,000/Month on a $100 Investment?
Saturday, 21 August 2010 14:42

I stumbled upon a blogger who asked the question above and found it interesting because it reflects the overall mindset of newcomers to the domain industry. The quick answer is: why, of course you can. But in order to accomplish this you have to make several calculated choices.

Which Do You Want to Spend More of?

There are three ways you can go about any investment: spending more time (requires less money), spending more money (requires less time) or spending equal amounts of time & money (a luxury most of us cannot afford). A $100 investment is going to require that you spend more time building your website, marketing your website and educating yourself about the domain industry and its related fields.

How Educated Are You in the Domain Industry and Related Fields?

There are several sub-skills required in the domain industry and even several related fields that you have to be familiar with in order to effectively do-it-yourself. Some examples: advertising, business, development, graphic design, promotion, monetization and even sub-skills of those sub-skills such as user interfacing, logo theory, script installation, hosting management, stat analyzation, buyer behavior and so on.

How Well Thought Out is Your Plan?

I can't even count on my hands and toes how many times development projects sound good in theory but ultimately fail when launched. A $100 investment will burn rather quickly if you don't carefully craft a well tested and well thought out plan.

Have You Bought a Domainer Scratch Off Ticket or Invented a Time Machine?

The only way to turn $100 into $1,000 a month (and doing absolutely nothing additional) is to: a) buy a time machine and go back to the 1990s or b) invest in domainer scratch off tickets if they ever become invented. I launched a site the other day for $0.00 but I paid for it with my ten years of experience. Elliot Silver had to invest way more than $100 to get his projects off the ground. Seems easy when you have the money to do it, right? Don't be fooled: there is always a circus going on the background.

I ask myself the same question for some time...I invested about $200 in domain names hopping to sell them and make some profit....guess what?I didn't ...Maybe i should have learned more about this industry...In fact i really think that I need somebody, like a menthor to help me with some advices...It's almost impossible to do something in this industry if you know little things about it...

@User: Everybody starts somewhere. Domaining.com did not exist back when I started 5 years ago. Imagine how the ones who started 10+ years ago had to learn. With all the domain forums and blogs running it is a lot more possible than impossible. Don't give up. Just site back and take some time to learn.

I would tell the new comer to learn from what he reads and others success stories and put into action what he can with the limited budget, have a plan or idea to turn the funds into something more. No free rides like any business. Take any offers and replace your domains with more or better ones and slowly build up. Then one day they may be the ones given advice instead of asking for it, then again maybe we will all always be asking for advice and learning.

Tia,

Your article grabbed my eye this morning while reading domaining.com. Though I usually don't post, I wanted to take a few seconds to agree with your very powerful post. You're spot-on regarding what newcomers need to do. But I think something should be added: "determination."

Many people don't know this, but I started in the domaining industry with only 100$ about 5 years ago. 100$ was all I could afford and it was a financial burden to part with it. This was when I was just graduated from school and was scraping to get by. Poor, but determined.....I took to the net and learned about domaining.

With smart work, education and determination, anyone can go extremely far in this industry.

When I meet people and they state they cannot do something, I agree with them. If you have a mindset that 100$ is not enough to start your own business in the domain industry, then you'll prove yourself right with your own self admonishment.

But if one thinks positive and works at it, they will have a successful career in domaining. I know it's possible because I've walked that path.

Good luck to your readers and to you, Tia!

Kind Regards!

Sean Stafford

I remember responding to this question on another blog. You can definitely make $1000 per month with a $100 investment. Target .com names with high CPC and affilate yourself out with 10-20 companies. Invest six months into writing articles and finding picture. Set up
one site to promote the 12 .com domains that you posses exceptional strengths in.

I would recommend a few fields. I'm preparing now to test this goal. As soon as I finish my graduate degree, I will full force on the plan. The blogger that asked the original question has a website at http://pooruncle.com.

Nice article Tia!

Poor Uncle http://pooruncle.com originally asked this question. It was written on Elliot's Blog. I remembered responding to this question. Newcomers can make $1000 with investing $100. The question referred to money, and not the time it takes to develop the domains.

You can make $1000 per monthly on a $100 investment. Buy 12 high CPC .com domains on interests that interest you most. Spend 2 months writing 30-40 300 word articles on each one of the domains. Apply to 10-20 affiliate programs. Do enough research to build a fan following.

Promote one site that refer people to the other 11 sites. There are several fields that will pay good money on CPC. I'm sure that you will find access to that information. Gather some cool photos to dress the domains. Also, use some affiliate sites that are similar to your content. Strike deals with companies that operate in that industry.

I can list a dozen steps. The domainer won't have to spend more than the cost of the .com registrations. I would maybe recommend using 11 .com and the .info to that those sites. Forward the .info to the .com. Create at least 20 subdomains that point to various articles in the sites.

Newcomers are not dreaming of making money. It can be done on a $100 investment. When you calculate opportunity cost, then the investment is far more than $100. I think the blogger was looking for information on how to make a $1000 with $100, not accounting for the value of time. You can build links to the domains with putting working into adding insightful comments.

Making $1000 a month can be done with $100. Some domain investors don't factor in the time it takes to make a sale. I think it much more efficient to develop domains into profitable websites. Then, you make monthly income, and the site can be resold for 10 times its value.

Thanks for sharing the article.

p.s. Your comment authentication process is irritating.

"p.s. Your comment authentication process is irritating."

Thanks for letting me know, Jason. I am in the process of revamping several areas of my site and this will be one of them. Are you referring to the obscure message that appears off screen after comment submission?

Developing domains is only possible if you are in the field of that particular domain keyword and posses great knowledge of that. Else, Just don't try it!
