When to Monetize: That is the Question.

"So we keep talking about development and I have been talking about it since 1997. But developing without a real business behind it is missing something. Maybe the way to develop is to start with a “Cash Register” and then build something around it. Work backwards. That was how I bought my first domain. Working backwards."

~ Rick Schwartz, Domain Industry Expanding But Domainers are Shrinking. Here's Why. Here's the Fix.

I found that particular quote interesting and wanted to emphasize on the point that some domainers use monetization as their main focal when developing a domain.

If you dive into development without knowing your target audience; their surfing habits, what demand need you will fulfill, what your competitors look like, etc, etc: then how you monetize doesn't matter a damn if you aren't properly connecting with your target audience.

You cannot slap Adsense on a page and expect your site to grow overnight. The best marketing advice I ever received was that if something is to work effectively, you will receive the results almost immediately. If not, you need to revisit your plans. You cannot successfully develop with the "slow growth" mindset and tell yourself you will figure these things out later down the road. These things have to be figured out before development.

Monetization should always be in the back of your mind when developing but not the main focus. You cannot successfully monetize a site without there being an audience to click on ads, sign up for products/services, give you their information, etc. Make your plans around attracting your target audience instead so that you can monetize effectively.

I think monetization is good, but the current model that most use is slowly falling by the wayside. As technology escalates the way people search for things and consume things will drastically change as the internet evolves. Technology can either be our ally or our foe depending on how we use it and adapt. It's the same with any technological model or living thing, you either evolve and adapt to the new environment around you or you perish. It just seems people are still hawking the same bill of goods they were five years ago and it is painfully apparent that it is becoming obsolete. Time to explore new ideas and technologies.
